On Saturday, October 29th, all of the Girl Scouts and
Brownies throughout Shrewsbury participated in a town-wide
cupcake sale. Cupcakes were sold at all soccer fields to
raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims through an
organization called Book Relief. Book Relief has solicited
3 1/2 million children's books from publishing companies,
but needs money to get the books to the areas/people in
need. For every .50 cents donated, one book, with a
personalized message on a bookmark is sent to either a
school, library or shelter. It is the hope that each child
leaving a shelter will have a small collection to restart
his/her own personal library.
The Shrewsbury Girl Scouts raised $327 by selling cupcakes
for .50 cents each. This translates into 654 books being
sent to the areas hit by the hurricane. Hats off to the
scouts, and may continued support be with our fellow
Americans in the south!!!
